Welcome! You can download the chart for this pattern below, but allow me a second to tell you about why this pattern is so important to me. I am the mother of a trans man, and a non-binary person. It seems more and more these days that my kids are not going to have the same rights that their father and I have. LGBTQIA+ folks are attacked and demonized regularly in what I believe to be a cynical ploy to divide us. They are called terrible things and some people even treat them like criminals when all they want to do is be themselves, and enjoy the same comfort moving through the world as the rest of us. As a mom, I have to do what I can to help protect my kids (even though they’re adults). I volunteer, and donate, and support other parents in my position. But it sometimes feels like it will never be enough. Even in my leisure time it’s on my mind. So, I made this chart, and shawl. It was so much fun to make and had the benefit of bringing me joy while also supporting a cause close to my heart. I’d like those of you who are so inclined to be able to do the same.

About This Chart

This is a multipurpose chart that you can use for double knitting, stranded colorwork, cross-stitch. With a little modification you can even use it for tapestry or filet crochet. Get creative and make it your own.

I used it to make a double-knit shawl with Caron Cloud Cakes Perfect Phasing Yarn in the colors Coral and Royal. You can achieve the color transition by pulling yarn from the inside of one cake and the outside of the other cake. I used a size 5 circular needle with at least a 29 inch cord.. When double knitting, it’s best to use a smaller needle than the one recommended on the yarn label. That will prevent the color on the reverse side from showing through. The chart pattern used 2 cakes of yarn (around 720 yards per cake). I had to use a little bit of another cake to do the edging.

If you’re new to double knitting, Nimble Needles has some great tutorials on YouYube. Here’s one about casting on for double knitting. https://youtu.be/2IWI2jIpmBM. Most double knitting patterns are reversible, however because of the letters, this one is not. The words will appear backwards on the reverse side. So chose which color you want to be dominant when you cast on.

The lace edging is the Wave Rider pattern from Vogue Knitting’s Stitchionary: Volume 5 Lace Knitting.

I am giving this pattern away, but if you enjoy making it, please consider making a donation to one of these charities.
